Audio Commander is a comprehensive audio conversion program designed for serious audio professionals and enthusiasts and has command line functionality built-in so it can be integrated into larger audio editing systems. Audio Commander’s configurability makes it very versatile and is one of its greatest strengths.
While Audio Commander has a nice array of features, it suffers from a few problems, namely the price tag, that kept it out of our top three. It doesn’t do much more than the #1 program, Switch, and yet it costs more than three times as much. Also, Audio Commander has good file compatibility, but comparatively it’s not exceptional, and the support resources are limited.
The command line functionality is one of the most important features in Audio Commander, especially for doing a large number of conversions. Audio Commander is also useful for extracting audio from CDs and video files. Audio Commander has customizable options for bit rate, sampling rate and channels for each file format.
Audio Commander handles 25 different music formats, including MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC and other common formats. The list of output formats is also pretty good, with 16 different choices.
We really liked the interface in Audio Commander, even though it looked a little clunky at first. Audio Commander has a section of the window dedicated to the output format that shows the configuration options at all times. It was nice not to have to hunt for this in a menu somewhere.
This is one of the areas where Audio Commander really falters. Mystik Media, the software developer, only offers limited support resources. They have standard email support and tutorials, but not much else. To their credit, they are one of only two companies that offer phone support.
Audio Commander is really good, but not good enough to justify the price when so many other programs do the same thing for less.
